Is it gorgeous? Glad you asked! Yes, it's another beautifully designed gatefold digipack CD sleeve designed by the dangerously talented Ed Woltil. Hold it, gaze at it, then write him a fawning fan letter.

about
Song ideas, for me, usually come through a melodic inspiration or by putting some interesting chords together...when I hit a vein that seems to click, often some lyrics will tumble out, and behind them I can glimpse the germ of a theme or mood. From there, it's like working out a puzzle for me, trying to flesh out that theme with some lines that go together in a satisfying way to tell the story.
Then there's a song like "Wake Up Dreaming" where the title itself becomes the genesis of a song. I don't recall the circumstance, but this title came knocking and I thought, 'that's a great song title – can't waste that one!'
I wanted the verses to be flights of fancy, seeing the waking world through dream-colored glasses. The bridges became a bit more freewheeling in their wordplay, maybe a hint of e.e. cummings influence...there's sense there, but cloaked in a little childlike singsong. After all, where's the fun in spelling it out too clearly?
An earlier unreleased version of this song exists, recorded by my old band, Drive Thru Church. Steve always loved this one, so it only seemed natural to take it out for another spin here. I was never entirely satisfied with the earlier version anyway.
Drummer Chuck Darling graces this track with some beautiful brushwork, and as usual Steve comes out of left field with some brilliant vocal counter-melodies. Engineer Brian Merrill somehow
managed to take our overflowing sonic textures and unify them
into a cracking good mix. I'm blessed to have
talented friends. —Ed
lyrics
When you wake up dreaming
visions fill your head
and sunbeams spillin' 'cross your bed
come through the window streaming
like chords from God's guitar
that ring across the reaches from afar.
You know the sound, you know the fury
in a shell, seashell, swing on a bell
and all the world may be sad and weary
but you can say that she's lookin' well
'Cause you wake up dreaming
and everything is new
like poppies dropped with morning dew
in fields of color seeming
to liberate the day
and rescue grieving eyes from skies of grey.
You know the power, you know the glory
of a grin, come in, where've you been?
And every day may be the same old story,
but crack a dream door and tumble in…
{ I N S E R T D A Y D R E A M }
You know the sound, you know the fury
in a shell, seashell, swing on a bell
and all the world may be sad and weary
but you can say that she's lookin' well
'Cause you wake up dreaming,
the schedule squares your brain
and holds you prisoner on the train.
Somewhere an angel's scheming
to switch you off the track,
you can't switch off the dream of turning back,
you can't switch off the dream of turning back,
you can't switch off the dream of turning back.
When you wake up dreaming,
when you wake up dreaming…
When you wake up dreaming
on a sunbeam streaming
You're wide awake
no time to waste.
